Break through therapeutic blocks with Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Have you invested significant time and energy in therapy, but feel like you’ve hit a wall? Or that traditional talk therapy has fallen short of what you need to get unstuck? Maybe the logical part of you understands why you’re blocked, but the emotional part of you has struggled to take the leap in breaking old patterns. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) could be the game-changer you’ve been searching for.

Get unstuck at the neurobiological level

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy combines the best of both worlds: tried and true therapeutic tools and a medicine that makes your brain more open to change at a biological level. Ketamine helps make space for more self-love first by reducing activity in a part of the brain called the “default mode network.” The default mode network is active when our brain is not honed in on a specific task, but instead daydreaming or reflecting. Sounds nice, right? Maybe not for folks who experience anxiety, depression, and PTSD… For these groups, the default mode network activation is associated with ruminating about negative past experiences, rehearsing the tape of unkind self-talk, and searching for signs of danger. Ketamine turns the volume down on these thought habits so new, healthier thoughts are easier to hear. Ah, what a relief!

In addition to giving you a break from rumination, ketamine also offers a period of increased neuroplasticity following a dosing session. More neuroplasticity allows the neurons in the brain have an easier time connecting with one another. These new connections help physically cement new learning patterns in your brain. Research suggests that the window for increased neuroplasticity lasts anywhere from 24 hours to two weeks following ketamine administration. That’s partly what informed the recommended eight-dose protocol with a medicinal session every two weeks. A lot can change over the course of a four month intensive treatment protocol, especially when we harness the power of neurobiology.

How you’ll feel after ketamine-assisted psychotherapy

In the short term, folks who experience a ketamine dosing session often report having a meaningful reflective experience followed by positive mood that lasts a few days. Halfway through the eight session protocol, you’re likely to notice recurring themes in habits you’re looking to change: more awareness of sticky thoughts, noticing triggers in real time, seeing choice points for different behavior. You may realize that it’s just a bit easier to make the more self-compassionate choice, that the changes are coming more naturally than in previous therapy (that’s the neurobiological shift at play!). At the end of the protocol, you will have months of practice speaking to yourself more kindly, responding effectively to difficult situations, and prioritizing choices that improve your mood. KAP can help you reconnect with hope and a renewed sense of joy in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Ketamine is prescribed through a partnership with Journey Clinical. A member of their medical team will meet with you in a virtual telehealth session to ensure that ketamine is an appropriate fit given your needs and screen for any risk factors. Once medically cleared, they will send a prescription for two doses of ketamine lozenges to a partnered compounding pharmacy. The prescription is delivered to your home address. A follow up appointment with medical staff will be scheduled after your second dosing session to adjust the prescription if needed and provide a prescription for an additional six doses.

There are many forms of ketamine administration that offer different pros and cons. Journey Clinical uses lozenges that dissolve in the mouth. In comparison to intravenous or intramuscular routes, oral lozenges offer more flexibility and control over your dosing experience. First of all, you get to take the medicine in the comfort of your own home as opposed to a sterile medical setting. Additionally, your dose is provided in three separate lozenges, giving you more control over dose intensity and pace (e.g. you may take all three lozenges at once, skip the third lozenge, or take the third lozenge optionally later in the dosing session).

  • All dosing sessions are conducted virtually from the comfort of your own home. You will have a support person present (e.g. friend, partner, family member) who can be available if you need anything. I will be present via secure video telehealth to guide the process.

Dosing sessions are typically scheduled for three hours. The first hour is dedicated to preparing for dosing, including setting intentions, creating a relaxing environment, and settling into the present moment. The second hour is reserved for the dosing itself. You will self-administer the ketamine in the form of a dissolvable lozenge. The experience typically lasts 45 - 60 minutes. The third hour allows time for you to begin to synthesize any themes, feelings, or images from the ketamine experience.

  • Ketamine may produce altered states of awareness or a dreamlike experience, but you remain conscious and in control throughout the session. Folks often report deep relaxation, sometimes accompanied by imagery when eyes are closed. Listening to music and wearing eyeshades can enhance the visual experience. As your therapist, I will be connected with you via video to ensure your safety and comfort.

  • The most common dosing protocol through Journey Clinical recommends eight sessions. The first two doses are followed by a check in with your prescriber to ensure that the dose fits your needs. The prescriber then may write an additional prescription for six more doses. This protocol makes space for dosing trial and error, becoming accustomed to the process, and integrating insights over time.
